Album notes
Ant got us this gig. This was a Princeton University bar. Ummm, if by bar, you mean the basement of some building on campus and some kegs of beer. Maybe with some Korean graduate student milling about. We double-billed with The Elementals -- a band from Philly featuring another grad student friend of Ant's.
Recorded live from Ant's boom box sitting behind the sound board. The soundman forgot to hit record and missed the firts three songs. This is the first alt.sex.dentist gig we recorded.
In 2010 Jim digitized these files from the origial cassette.
This is the first set we did not start with the My Street / Instrumentl E / Hazel Eyes trio.
Discussion
As usual, the boys broke it all down via email in the days after the gig. Here are their email exchanges. An attempt has been made to preserve the original style.
Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 09:36:46 -0500 (EST) hey boys, good job last night. rusty? perhaps, but solid. we may want to try to practice once before the princeton gig. joe and i sent this out message out to every grad student: ATTENTION ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS! Date: Fri, 09 Feb 96 09:49:37 EST hey fellas, yes, great gig and a great time. i think we sounded very good and we were definitely energized. limited misstakes and those that did occur were handled well and i don't think noticed by the crowd. the mrs. said we definitely had the crowd more interested in us than the elementals. even though they had more dancers (i assume their drunken friends), we had most of the crowds toes tapping and heads bobbing. love to play there again. big crowd. the cheapest beer on earth ($5 for a pitcher of bass!). aaron i remember seeing your sweater thrown on top of the gig stuff in front of the sound board. later. norman thomas (class of '05 and socialist party presidential candidate 1932-1952). |
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 96 09:55:49 EST hey fellas, so a very good and uplifting gig. nice job all around. and ant, your best guitar work to date i think. so jockko wants us to open up next friday. interesting. he had to hear us play first and then after hearing us he wasvery eager to have us play with grovers (another ego uplift). odd, i feel my soccer days competitiveness coming back in the form of dueling bands (ie. saying to myself "man, those guys ain't so hot...we're better than them...we have more soul and energy...") interesting. now, let me think about friday. monica and i had plans to go visit some friends of hers. but, yes take the gig (you practice without me, you can gig without me (it's vailsburg all over again possibly)). hmmm. i'll let you know what's up. arrggghhh. so let me think. gotta run. jim, enjoy philly. later. tjr (of course if i'm not there jockko my jump in ...) |
Date: Fri, 9 Feb 1996 11:00:38 -0500 (EST) great gig. we may want to re-think the trenton gig, too. i would have no problem NOT doing it. i mean, you know it will not top this one and a week off from gigging would not be the end of the world as far as i am concerned. i really has all the makings of a disaster. but, on the other hand there is nothing to lose... lets consider it carefully and let aaron know as soon as possible. we can come up with an excuse since it was on such short notice. rosko can't make it and i forgot that i had something going on that night as well or whatever. lets iron it out ASAP. ate: Fri, 9 Feb 1996 12:02:25 -0500 (EST) i sent this message to sheffer who showed up late to our gig: scott, playoffs begin on monday. the lady at the intramural office would not tell me if we play. "the schedule is in the hall and i am not going out there to check". (get of your fat ass, i am thinking). anyway, could you make it down there to check the time? by the way, i was sorry that you missed us play last night. actually, you missed out, rosko bit the head off a live pigeon and i smashed my guitar to pieces at the end of the last song and jim and aaron took off all their clothes for a number that has now been renamed, "tokyo salsa, all nude, all the time" :-) ajm |
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 96 18:35:14 EST hey fellas, i anxiously await hearing the tape. yes, let's think about the tsc gig. actually ant, i do not think that we can do with a week off (it is best to play every week (our best gigs have had rehearsals the week before, the worst have not). but i don't know what i want to do yet. i'll let you know. yeah, I t could be a disaster (alloch was telling me that they have a slot from 8 to 12 and that first the first hour he and another guy are going to play the sitar (this is no lie, that's what he said). so first an hour of sitar, then us, then grovers. could be terrible. however, we could also come through as the shining star of the evening. well, think about it. does aaron know that alloch asked us to open up for them? later. ant, what are you doing this weekend? monica and i are staying in the city tonight over her friend jill's place. then we're heading back to h.p. i have a paper due wed. so i'll be at the library at some point. but if you and deb are in town. please stop by (but no pressure). later. tjr |
Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 08:44:59 -0500 (EST) hey fellas, per our individual conversations on sunday, i am getting more ready to play on friday night. jim, see if you can get more info on the gig: where it is, what time we play, etc. supposedly they have a PA, but you never know. do we need microphones, etc? probably a disaster, but in that sense we also have nothing to lose. and, if ever there was an opportunity for me to sing, i guess this is the perfect chance. i know 90% of all the lyrics. well, hey i know i can get the lyrics as close as rosko did at the d-bar:
when i ride the streetcars and when i take the subways... :-) since there will undoubtedly have been no advance billing, and since rosko is likely not attending, perhaps we should take the opportunity to rename ourselves for this gig (i.e.soft white underbelly). Any nominations? i vote for: naughty hans ajm |
